How do I book into lessons?
All new customers wishing to enrol in Learn to Swim classes are required to create an account via the My Enrolments tab on our website.
Children under 3 years of age do not require an assessment and will be automatically placed in one of our Baby and Me classes based on age:
Tadpoles: 6–12 months
Frogs: 12–24 months
Seahorses: 2–3 years
Children aged 3 years and over who are unable to swim 5 metres unassisted will be placed in the Goldfish level. All other children will need to attend an assessment to determine the most appropriate class level for their ability. Class placement is based on each child’s swimming ability.

What should my child wear to their lesson?
To ensure a safe and effective swimming experience for all swimmers, please note the following swimwear and equipment guidelines:
Swimming caps are compulsory and can be purchased at Swim Office for $15.
Goggles are strongly encouraged and should be well-fitting. A selection is available at Swim Office ($20–$30).
Jewellery should not be worn during lessons for safety reasons,
Babies and toddlers must wear a swimmer’s nappy underneath a purpose-fitted neoprene swim nappy, such as a Happy Nappy or Toastee Pants, to prevent accidents in the pool.
The neoprene nappy should fit snugly around the legs and waist—firm enough to be secure, but not so tight as to leave red marks. The nappy underneath must be completely covered by the neoprene layer. Toastee Pants are available from the Swim Office for $25.
Please dispose of all used nappies off-site to help us maintain hygiene and comfort for all swimmers.
Recommended swimwear:
Girls: One-piece swimsuit
Boys: Firm-fitting swim briefs or jammers
Rash shirts, board shorts, and wetsuits are not recommended as they can restrict movement and hinder learning. Standard lycra rash vests do not provide warmth and may add unnecessary drag if not snug-fitting.
Squad swimmers are expected to bring their own fins, kickboard and a water bottle to each session.
Do I need to be in the pool with my child?
For safety and support, a parent or carer must be in the water with all children under 3 years of age during lessons.
Can I sit on pool deck while my child is swimming?
For the safety and wellbeing of our swimmers, instructors, deck supervisors and to ensure a positive learning experience for all swimmers, the red matted area surrounding the pool is a designated parent/carer-free zone at all times.
KRB Swimming permits parents and carers of children under 8 years of age to sit in the grandstand or courtyard to observe lessons. We kindly ask that, once your child has been handed over to their instructor, you trust in our team’s expertise and refrain from hovering near the lanes, as this can distract your child and hinder their learning progress.
To help maintain a safe and efficient environment in the changing areas and grandstand, we request that families arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to the lesson and depart within 15 minutes after it concludes.
My child is not well, can they still attend their lesson?
To ensure the health and safety of all swimmers and staff, children should not attend swimming lessons if they are unwell. Any open cuts or abrasions must be properly covered before entering the pool.
Children must not attend lessons if they are experiencing any of the following:
- Flu-like symptoms, including fever, head cold, runny nose, or sore throat
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Any contagious condition, such as impetigo, conjunctivitis, or chicken pox
Do you provide make up lessons?
KRB Swimming allows one complementary make-up lesson per term.
To be eligible, absences must be recorded in advance via the online customer portal or by emailing swimming@krb.nsw.edu.au.
Make-up lessons are subject to class availability and instructor consistency cannot be guaranteed. Please note that missed make-up lessons cannot be rescheduled.
Can I speak to my child’s Instructor
To ensure the quality and safety of all lessons, we kindly ask that parents and carers do not approach instructors before, during, or immediately after classes. Engaging with instructors during these times can disrupt the lesson and distract them from supervising the swimmers and maintaining awareness of the pool environment.
If you have any questions or would like an update on your child’s progress, please speak with the Learn to Swim Coordinator or our Pool Deck Supervisor.
How do I know when my child is ready to move levels?
Each class level has a set of specific skills that must be confidently achieved before a child can progress to the next level. Progression is influenced by a variety of factors and it’s important to remember that every child learns and develops at their own pace.
It is not uncommon for a swimmer to remain in the same level for several terms. This allows time to build strong foundations and ensure skills are performed correctly and consistently.
The more engaged and focused a child is during lessons and the more opportunities they have to practise, the sooner you may see progress. Our goal is to support every swimmer in building lasting confidence and technique in the water.
When are children assessed?
At KRB, assessment is an ongoing process. Our experienced Deck Supervisors continuously monitor lessons and assess swimmers throughout the term. This approach allows children to be promoted as soon as they demonstrate all required skills for their current level.
Promotion to the next level occurs when a swimmer has achieved all competencies, ensuring progress is not delayed.
If your child is ready to move up to the next level, you will be contacted to discuss your options and arrange changes to your booking.
Our class schedules are constantly changing. There are many factors that affect class schedules: teacher availability, enrolment numbers, swimmers’ ability, daylight savings, pool space and more.
As your child progresses through the program they may not be able to keep their same lesson time. Please be patient with our staff – they have over 250 swimmers to place, shuffle, move up or around on any given day.
How long will it take my child to learn to swim
This is a tricky question, as every child learns at their own pace—just like they do when learning to roll, walk, talk, or ride a bike. No two swimmers are the same, and many factors can affect how quickly they progress.
The first and most important step is helping your child feel safe, confident and relaxed in the water. This can take time, especially if they’ve had limited experience or feel unsure around water.
We ask that you avoid comparing your child’s progress to that of siblings or friends, as every child’s journey is unique. Consistency and patience are key to progress. It is common for children to experience plateaus at various stages, some may learn skills quickly at first and then slow down, while others may take more time initially but then progress rapidly.
Our best advice for families is be reliable, swim regularly and be consistent. Swimming year-round supports steady progress and skill retention. Two lessons per week gives swimmers the best chance to learn quickly.
On average, children typically spend around 3 terms at each level in our learn-to-swim program. However, progression varies for each child and depends on multiple factors:
- Age
- Coordination and flexibility
- Fears or anxieties
- Amount of practice
- Ability to follow instructions
- Level of focus and attitude
- Willingness to learn
We encourage you to trust the learning process and kindly request that you refrain from sideline teaching during lessons, as this can unintentionally undermine the instructor and create confusion for your child.
If you have concerns that your child is not responding well to their instructor, please speak with the Deck Supervisor, who will be happy to explore alternative solutions.
How can I fast track my child’s progress?
To help speed up your child’s swim progress, we recommend:
- Attending two lessons per week
- Joining our Holiday Intensive programs
- Booking private lessons
- Or simply visiting your local pool regularly for extra practice
If your child isn’t quite clicking in a group class, private lessons can be a fantastic option. One-on-one coaching is especially great for little swimmers who might feel a bit nervous in the water, it can be just the boost they need to dive into their swimming journey with confidence.
Will my child stay with the same Instructor for the term?
At KRB, we strive to provide consistent instructors throughout each term to support your child’s progress. However, due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness or staff changes, this cannot always be guaranteed.
Please be assured that all our instructors are fully qualified through Austswim, Swim Australia, or Royal Life Saving, and complete comprehensive KRB training. They also hold current CPR certification and Working With Children checks to ensure your child’s safety and quality of instruction at all times.
What can I do to stop my baby/child from crying at the pool?
If your child becomes upset during lessons, start by identifying what might be causing their discomfort. Are they tired, hungry, or feeling cold? Do they have a fear of water in their eyes or ears? Understanding the cause makes it much easier to address.
If your baby or child cries during the lesson, try to avoid taking them out of the water immediately. Allowing young swimmers to leave the pool every time they get upset can create a negative association between being upset and leaving the water, which may hinder their progress.
When is the best time for my child to take a break from swimming lessons
At KRB, we believe swimming is something to enjoy all year round.
Our program helps children build their skills over time, so regular swimming is the best way to keep learning and improving.
Taking a break can slow progress or cause swimmers to forget some skills. If your child has had time away, we may ask you to come in for a quick assessment so we can place them in the right level
Can I photograph or video my child during their swim lesson?
Out of respect for others families who may not wish for their children to be photographed or filmed while attending lessons or using our facilities, photography and video is not permitted within the pool or facility.
Can I request that my child’s lesson is taught by their favourite Instructor?
While we cannot guarantee specific requests, we will always do our best to take your preferences into consideration and accommodate them where possible.
In many cases, a change in class, time, or instructor can be a positive shift and offer new opportunities for progress and growth.
Do you have change facilities?
At KRB Swimming, we are committed to maintaining a safe, healthy, and respectful environment for all swimmers and families.
We strongly encourage swimmers to arrive “ready to swim” and make use of a quick change after lessons, where possible.
Our facilities include:
- Female and male changing rooms
- Accessible (disabled) and baby change facilities
- Separate male and female toilets
For the safety and comfort of all patrons:
- Changing on the pool deck or in public view is not permitted.
- Children should only be accompanied into a change room when assistance is required.
- Children aged 6 years and over must use the gender-appropriate changing room.
Do you offer Adult lessons?
Our Adult Squad is open to swimmers of all levels aged 16 and over. Participants should be able to swim at least 100 metres of freestyle with confidence.
Sessions focus on fitness, technique, and skill development across all four strokes—though participation in each is optional. Whether you’re swimming for fitness or looking for training and competitive guidance, our coach provides tailored stroke correction, structured sets, and personalised coaching support to help you achieve your goals.
